Prud’hon was a French Romantic painter and draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits. He trained in Italy where he became influenced by the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio. He later became one of Napoleon’s favourite artists.
‘La Caresse’ depicts Daphne drawing an arrow from a wounded Apollo and was drawn by a very talented French artist, possibly in the circle of Prud’hon and in his lifetime. The drawing is beautifully presented in a quality mount, inscribed P.P.Prud’hon with an early 19th century French frame and a collection number. This suggests that this present work has been in a private collection for many years as a preliminary drawing by Prud’hon.
‘La Caresse’ and Prud’hon’s ‘L’e Gratigure’ were later engraved as a pair of pictures.
