A large early 19th Century oval needlework picture- hand embroidered in fine colourful wools with silk highlights and plush work- on silk ground, with painted sky and features. Embroidered with considerable skill- the rather difficult “split” stitch was used for much of the work, creating a beautiful textured effect with subtle shading, particularly for the costumes. “Satin” stitch “French knots” and “stem” stitch were used to give variety and depth and the distant hills worked in minute silken “stab” stitches. This embroidery is enhanced by its impressive original verse eglomise decorated glass.
