HENRY REYNOLDS STEER R.I.
‘Gathering at the Inn’
He was a landscape and genre painter and watercolourist. At the beginning of his career he was an illustrator and lithographer; turned to painting in oils and then watercolours. He mostly painted literary and historical genre, especially scenes from Dickens, Sheriden and Pepys; his landscapes are of fine quality.
He was elected member of the Royal Institute in 1884, and the Royal Miniature Society in 1996. He exhibited at the RA, RBA, RHA, RI (215), RMS, ROI, the New Gallery, DOW, and in the Manchester, Leicester and Birmingham Galleries. He is represented in the Liverpool and Leicester Art Galleries.
‘Gathering at the Inn’ is a particularly fine work, ambitious in size, and immensely warm in detail.
