He studied under Philippe-Jacques van Bree in the Academy Antwerp, and under Baron Gustave Wappers in Paris. Decided to devote his talents to painting horses and other animals. Introduced by Wappers to Queen Victoria who commissioned a series of drawings and watercolours, now in the Royal Collection (Windsor Castle).
He enjoyed considerable success during his career he was Knighted in the Order of Leopald in 1864, and awarded a gold medal at a Brussels exhibition in 1866.
He is represented in the Brussels, Antwerp and Hamburg Museums of Fine Art, the Brussels and British Royal Collections.
