The Timber Team’ Attributed to John Frederick Herring Snr (1795-1865.) Unsigned. An evocative oil on canvas in original swept gilt frame, restored re-lined. John Frederick Herring Senior was the son of a London Merchant of Dutch parantage who had been born overseas in America. At the age of 18 he moved to Doncaster, where he was employed as a painter of Inn signs and insignia on the sides of coaches. He spent his spare time painting horse portraits and was duly recognised for his talent by wealthy customers and began painting Hunters and Race horses for the Gentry. He moved to Newmarket in 1830, spending three years before moving to London. In 1840-1841 he visited Paris and painted several pictures for the Duke of Orleans, son of the French King Louis-Phillipe. In 1845 he was appointed animal painter to HRH The Dutchess of Kent, followed by commissions for the ruling Queen Victoria, who remained a patron for the rest of his life. The paintings of Herring were very popular and many were engraved. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, The British Institution and the Society of British Artists.
