‘Portrait of a Boy with his Favourite Friend’

This is probably a finished sketch for a larger work It is however a fine image in wonderful condition.

Peele was born in Petersborough. At the age of 12 he emigrated to America with his parents and settled in Buffalo. He studied in New York, then worked in Albany for two years as a portrait painter. He returned to New York and was elected member of the National Academy of Design. About 1851 he came to London where he remained except for stays in Liverpool and the Isle of Man.

He exhibited at the RA, British Institute, Suffolk Street Galleries, Glasgow Institute and in Birmingham. One of his paintings The Children in the Wood was bought by Prince Albert. He also had many patrons in America, including Frederick Church, the landscape painter. He is represented in American museums, including the Albany Institute and the National Academy of Design: in England museums, including Rotherham, Sheffield and Southampton City Art Gallery.
