Shayer Sr. was a self taught artist who lived in Southampton. He was an excellent prolific artist who divided his work into two categories — rustic woodland and coastal genre scenes.
He exhibited mainly at the Suffolk Street Galleries (338 works). He also exhibited 82 works at the British Institute and 6 at the Royal Academy. He is represented in the Victortia and Albert Museum, the Guildhall, the Glasgow Gallery, the Wolverhampton Gallery and many other provincial museums.
