He was a self taught landscape painter in oils and watercolour, born in Bristol, where he worked and instructed until the age of 35; he was a born teacher, his pupils included Henry Dawson and William J Muller. He then moved to London.  He travelled to Italy and the Continent to gather material which he later worked up into finished pictures. His work was methodical and greatly influenced by Turner with dramatic effects and the use of yellow tones.

He exhibited at the RA, the British Institute and extensively (206) at the Suffolk Street Galleries (RSBA). 

He is represented in many collections, including:- the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert, the Liverpool Gallery, the Birmingham Gallery, the Wolverhampton Gallery, the Bristol Gallery and the Aberdeen Gallery.
