Victorian Bath Thermometer, Fahrenheit, in porcelain frame finely decorated and marked with Dr.Forbes specifications.

The thermometer was used to measure the temperatureof bath water, often used to give cold, warm or hot baths as part of medical treatment. 

The specifications were invented by Dr John Forbes (1787 - 1861), a Scottish physician who recommended therapeutic bathing.

This highly decorated instrument will have been for use by a wealthy Victorian household. Simpler cheaper versions were commonly used in hospitals into the 20th Century.
