He was a painter in oil and watercolour of extensive landscapes, town  scenes, portraits and crowd scenes.  He was born in Lancashire and spent part of his childhood in Australia and the Philippines.  Initially, he designed pottery and stained glass for the Pilkington Pottery Company.  He studied art at the Manchester School of Art, obtaining a scholarship to the R.C.A.  He was severely wounded whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers 1914-17.  On his return he took up his studies at the R.C.A., later studying at the Slade School, and in Paris and Italy.  He also visited Sweden, Russia, Spain and France.  Two of his paintings were purchased by the Chantrey Bequest in 1933 and 1938, and he was appointed as official artist to the Air Ministry in 1940.

His first one-man show was at Colnaghi’s in 1927.  He was an elected member of many societies during his lifetime (listed above).  He exhibited prolifically at London venues and elsewhere in Britain.  The list includes the Royal Academy,  R.W.S., N.E.A., R.S.A., R.H.A., the Glasgow Institute, R.P., the Manchester, Liverpool and Leicester Art Galleries, etc.  He is represented in many public collections.  He lived in Chelsea, London.
