This charming painting, circa 1780 is by a rare English portrait painter, who was born in 1754 and exhibited at the London Royal Academy.
Roth who is also known for his landscapes worked near Bristol during Thomas Gainsborough’s Bath period, (1759-74) and would have been familiar with his work. His style is also very close to Thomas Barker of Bath (1769 -1847), who specialised in landscapes and rural life.
The current composition possibly inspired by Thomas Gainsborough’s ‘Shepherd’, a subject Gainsborough used several times in the early 80’s, and ‘The Blue Boy’. (the pose of the present works’ shepherd boy parallel with that of ‘The Blue Boy’).
Presented in a fine gilt composition frame, re-gilded. Canvas relined & professionally restored.
