‘Highland Goats’

Cooper was an outstanding animal painter in oils and watercolours.  He studied at the Royal Academy Schools.  In 1827 he became a teacher in Brussels and was greatly influenced by the distinguished animal painter, Eugene Verboeckhoven and by his exposure to the 17th Century Dutch School.

He settled in London in 1831.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year continuously from 1833 to 1902, a total of 266 works.  He also exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries and the British Institute.  Between 1848 and 1856 he painted animals in landscapes by Frederick Lee and Thomas Creswick.

He is represented in numerous public museums and art galleries throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.

Cooper is celebrated as a fine painter of cattle and sheep.  This wonderful  study of wild goats in their natural environment is rare indeed, one of just a few painted around this date.
