‘A Venetian Capriccio ’

(possibly based on views of the Church San Georgio Maggiore)

His father was the celebrated artist Clarkson Frederick Stanfield.  George was trained by him to paint the same class of subjects including landscape and marine art.  He is best known for his topographical views of the Rhine and Moselle Valleys, Switzerland and the Italian Lakes, but his views of Venice are the most sought after works.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1844-1876 a total of 49 works, and at the British Institute (73 works).  He is represented in many public collections including York City Art Gallery and Bristol City Art Gallery.
