Biography: Frederick William Jackson was born in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1859. 59 years later he was buried in Middleton. In the intervening years he based himself in a number of locations.

Jackson was interested in art from an early age, after leaving school he studied at Oldham School of Art where he was introduced to the Manchester School, a group of artists that was influenced by the French artist’s colony at Barbizon. The Manchester School of artists rejected Victorian romanticism in favour of looking at nature and life in a more contemporary manner. 

Jackson moved to the Conway Valley in North Wales in 1880, where he met Clarence Whaite and Edward Norbury who founded the Royal Cambrian Academy. About this time, having become a member he frequently exhibited at the Manchester Academy of Fine Art.

In 1884, having moved to Paris, he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884. Before returning to England he toured in Italy, gaining inspiration from the Mediterranean light.

When Jackson eventually returned to England he settled down to married life in Hinderwell, North Yorkshire, not far from the fishing village of Staithes. It was in Staithes he joined the group of artists that was set up by Gilbert Foster. Other artist of the Staithes group were Dame Laura Knight and Frank Henry Mason. The aim of the group was to distance itself from the established world of art of the time and to concentrate on subjects drawn from contemporary life and beauty of the Yorkshire coast for inspiration. 

Condition: Excellent, oil on panel. This painting comes in an attractive gilt frame, ready to hang. Signed lower left.
